Definition: Consumer price index (CPI) measures the change in the prices of goods and services for consumption by the households of the country overtime. The main purpose of the CPI is to calculate the inflation rate by measuring the change in the prices of goods and services compared to the reference months i.e. previous month and the correspondence months of last year.


Classifications: Individual Consumption Classification by Purpose (COICOP) was used in determining the Baskets of Goods & Services comprising 356 items under 12 main groups and 94 commodities for Urban domain and 244 items under 12 main groups and 89 commodities for Rural domain to compute the indices.

Source of weights: Household budget survey (HIES 2015-16) was conducted with approximately 26000 households to get the consumption weights, and the survey year is also considered as the base year. The survey was conducted to get estimates at provincial level with Urban and Rural breakup.                     
Implementation of Base year 2015-16: The Base year 2015-16 was implemented under the PBS technical committee, with the approval of Governing Council and vetted by the international forums.

Source of Data: Monthly price data is collected from 68 urban markets of 35 cities and 27 rural centers to compute the monthly inflation (CPI) in the country.

Geographic coverageThe data encompassed urban and rural areas across the country.
